Bone Weathering & Dyeing Process
Weathering Process: You should take your bone scales and lay them out on a screen. Take the bone scales outside and leave them outside to weather for 7-10 days. They should be left out in rain or shine and should be placed in direct sunlight. After weathering process is complete, follow the directions for dyeing your scales below. Dyeing Process: To dye your bone scales use Fiebing's Professional Leather Dye or any similar type of dye. It comes in various colors and you can mix and dilute to suit you color and shade. Take dye mixture and put into mason jar or similar container, place bone sclaes into container, put lid back onto container and place outside in direct sunlight for 3 days. After 3 days you can remove bone scales and allow to dry. After the bone scales have dried, you can sand and buff to suit your need. Recommendation: Since the texture and grain of bones will vary. It is recommended that you should dye multiple sets of bone scales at one time to insure that you will get better matches in your sets. If dyeing just one set, one scale may be a little lighter than the other or have a slight difference in contrast.
